The Dual Champions 1936, Dual CH Sodak Gypsy Prince (Makota's Gypsy Prince x Bandy Lindy).Prince was the first dual champion Chesapeake. He was bred by Father Joseph Schuster in Minnesota and owned by Anthony Bliss. Anthony Bliss was President of the American Chesapeake Club from 1932-1936. "Prince" went on to become one of the foundational sires in the breed. Crossed with the progeny of FC Skipper Bob, Prince's descendents dominated the Chesapeake field trial scene for many years. "Skipper" was the First Field Champion in the breed. Anthony Bliss said of him: "Prince was fast and stilish with a natural ability to take direction. He was one of the greatest sires in the history of the Chesapeake. Not only did he sire field trial champions but his descendants dominated the Chesapeake field trials dogs for many years. Almost every Chesapeake field trial winner in the past twenty years can be traced back to Prince." 1959, Dual CH/AFC Mount Joy's Mallard (Nelgard's King Tut x Sasnakra Sassy).Mallard was know for his outstanding triple marking, he made a nice record. He was a large, dark deadgrass who became the second dual champion Chesapeake. Mallard was extensively bred and produced one Field Trial Champion (Mt. Joy's Luistoo) and an Amateur Field Trial Champion (Chesonoma's Louis). 1965, Dual CH/CFC & AFC Baron's Tule Tiger CD (Nelgard's Baron x Joanie Teal).Bred, owned and handled by Eloise Heller Cherry. Cherry referred us in her book "The Complete Chesapeake Bay Retriever" that Tiger was as handful, as he was determinated and willful. He was extremely capable, a fine marker and ran a good line on land. But his water blinds were where he really excelled. He was good looking and won his bench championship in three straight shows, as he did his obedience title. 1965, Dual CH/AFC Meg's O' Timothy, CDX (Beewacker's Chester x Meg's O' My Heart).Tim was a good looking brown dog who was extremely tractable. He performed well in field trials for his owner but where he really exelled was obedience. 1970, Dual CH/AFC Koolwater's Colt of Tricrown (Bomarc of South Bay x Welcome of the Willows).Colt was a large, dark brown dog with a fine temperament and a good personality. He marked very well. He died when he was about six years old, at the height of his career. His owner was crushed and never wanted, or had, another Chesapeake after that. 1970, Dual CH/AFC Tiger's Cub CD (Tule Tiger x Napolitano's Ladybug).Cherry wrote: "Cub was an handsome specimen with a broad chest and heavy bone. He was bred a lot, and almost all of his get resembled him, which is the sign of a prepotent sire. He was a gay, happy Obedience dog, as he seemed to love the close contact with his owner. Unlike his sire, Tule Tiger, who was always serious in the field, Cub had a sense of humor. To my great annoyance, this always got us into truble in field trials. Rex Carr trained Cub and he often tried Rex's patience because he would not work to his full capacity. Cub easily made his bench Championship. (...) For a deadly serious competitor, as I was in those days, Cub was most exasperating. However, he was a very ingratiating chap, who loved all dogs and people." 1976, Dual CH/AFC Capital City Jake WDX (Bay City Jake x Tawni Bri)"Cappy" was a handsome dog with a happy personality. He was an excellent representative of his breed, a companion, hunting dog, field trial dog, and show champion. Unfortunately, he went sterile at a young age. 1978, Dual CH Cub's Kobi King (Tiger's Cub x Chesareid April Echo).Kobi was a tough and determinated dog, he was medium sized, bright sedge in color, and quite handsome. Charles Sembrailo purchased him from his original owner, Helen Hartley. Kobi was professionally showed on the bench at the age of 11, got his Conformation title and became the seventh Dual Champion of our breed. Helen Hartley continually corrisponded with Sembrailo, wanting to know how Kobi was getting along. Sembrailo decided then to give Kobi back to Helen. 1985, Dual Champion Fireweeds Jasmine WDQ (Aleutian Surfbreaker x Wildwoods Fireweed)."Bred by Linda Harger out of FC/AFC Aleutian Surfbreaker and CH Wildwoods Fireweed and born on April 4, 1978, Jazzie was owned by Carol and Jon Andersen. Jasmine is the first Chesapeake bitch to be a DUAL. In 1984 she was a Finalist at the National Amateur, the first Chessy in 17 years to do so, and only the second bitch. Jasmine also went 7 series in the 1985 National Open. Carol handled "Jazzie" in both Nationals. Carol purchased Jazzie from Linda Harger when she was 2 1/2 years old. Because Jazzie worked better with shot birds and loud guns, she spent some time at Gloria & Walter Berths, where Gloria handled her to her 2nd Qualifying win. She then went to Mike Lardy who continued the collar program that Jerry Patopea started. Mike earned many JAMS with Jazzie, but she earned most of her points with Carol. Sanna Carey handled Jazzie to her Open win at Buckeye Retriever Club, which earned her Field Championship the fall of 1985. Jazzie was a beautiful, classic-looking Chesapeake, earning her Show Championship quickly after Carol purchased her from Linda. She earned 30 all-age field trial points. Jazzie was bred four times, producing both show champions and top working field trial dogs, two sons being Qualified All Age and Show Champions. Her daughter DUAL CH/AFC J.J.'s JESSIE CD is the SECOND Chesapeake bitch to be DUAL." Excerpted. Written by Carol Andersen, Caroway Kennel, Lake Forest, Illinois 1987, Dual CH/AFC JJ's Jessie CD, (Chesdel Chippewa Chief x Fireweeds Jasmine) whelped 9-20-82. Bred by Carol Andersen and owned by Linda Patterson and her daughter Jennifer Jaynes.Jessie is the 2nd DUAL Chesapeake bitch. As a young dog she was mainly trained by Linda and did well, winning a Derby and finishing many others. After Jessie was 2 years old, Linda went to work and Jessie sat until Carol convinced Linda to send her to Mike Lardy for collar conditioning and training. Five months later Mike ran her in her first Qualifyng trial and Jessie got 2nd place, making her a Qualifyed all-age field trial dog. At five years, Mike completed Jessie's Field Championship. Two months later Mitch Patterson, Linda's husband, completed her show championship." Bred to Humboldt Bay Skipper MH, Jessie produced the DUAL CH/AFC J.J.'S CHI-TOWN BLIZZARD CD MH. Excerpted. Written by Carol Andersen, Caroway Kennel, Lake Forest, Illinois 1989, Dual CH/AFC Coot's Gypsy Clipper MH (Capt Cody's Coot Catcher MH x CH Chip's Gypsy of Caroway).Bred by Carol Andersen and owned by Linda Harger and Tom Ivey. Carol Andersen sent Clipper as a stud fee pup to Harry Cody. Tom Ivey bought Clipper and placed him with Linda Harger to develop his natural talent without a collar. Clipper is the first Chesapeake and first retriever of any breed to hold a Dual/AFC & Master Hunter titles. 1997, Dual CH/AFC JJ's Chi Town Blizzard CD, MH (Humbolt Bay Skipper x JJ's JessieLizzie (r.) is shown here with her dam DC/AFC JJ'S Jessie CD (l.). Bred, owned, trained and handled by Linda Patterson, Lizzie represents the third generation of a line of Dual Champion bitches, being Jessie's daugher and Jazz's granddaughter. 1999, Dual CH/ AFC Gambler's Dilwyn Stacked Deck MH (Caroway's Gambler x Clipper's Dilwyn Mink).Decks is probably the best all-time chesapeake. Decks was not only an outstanding Field Trial dog and a Conformation Champion but also an outstanding stud dog, too. He sired 3 Dual Champions (2 in the USA, 1 in Europe) and many all-age Field Trial dogs. Decks is the sire of our French Dual CH/AFC/Dt./VDH CH Caroway's Sergeant Pepper JH WDQ, the first Dual Champion Chesapeake in Europe. Out of Clippers Dilwyn Mink by the CH Caroway's Gambler MH, Decks pedigree traces back to the first Dual Champion Chesapeake - DC Sodak Gypsy Prince - and, most recently, to the DC/AFC Coot's Gypsy Clipper MH. Decks is a very handsome, brown, well balanced, medium sized dog. We had the pleasure to see Decks run at the ACC FT Speciality 1999 in Downata Hot Springs, ID, U.S.A. and to see him again in 2005 in Winslow, NJ. Showed here with his owner Bruce Mitchell at the ACC Field Trial Speciality 05 in New Jersey, at the age of 14 years Decks retrieved without hesitaton a flyer pheasant shot for him. We loved Decks since the first time we saw him. In our opinion he is the best and most true example how a Chesapeake Bay Retriever has to be. 2001, Dual CH/AFC Westwind's Rudy of Nordais (Caroway's Wild Goose Chase x Nordais Harry's Plume).Rudy is showed here with his owner Wendy Shepard Chrisholm DVM at the ACC Field Trial Speciality 99 in Idaho. Bred by Mario Beauregard, Rudy was an handsome, large, brown dog with a great personality and drive in the work. Out of the AFC/CH Caroway's Wild Goose Chase, Rudy is the sire of the Dual CH/AFC Bertram's Blazing Firewater MH, too. 2004, Dual CH/AFC Sunday's Rufwater Canvasback MH (Gambler's Dilwyn Stacked Deck x Sugartree's Little Bitomitz).Canvas is another Dual Champion sired by DC/AFC Gambler's Dilwyn Stacked Deck MH. Medium sized on the smaller side, solid brown in color, Canvas is a truly handsome dog. He is pictured here with co-owner Scott Martin at the ACC FT Speciality 99 in Idaho, after running the qualifying water series. 2005, Dual CH/AFC Bertrand's Blazing Firewater MH, (Westwind's Rudy of Nordais x Lane's Turnpike Jessie).Shown here with his owner Kurt Bertram at the ACC Field Trial Speciality 05 in New Jersey. Blaze is a handsome and talented dog whose sire was the DC/AFC Westwind's Rudy of Nordais MH. He has a lot of go in the field and is extremely tractable, with a wonderful training attitude. Blaze is a large, well built, dark brown dog. 2005, Dual CH/AFC Distagon MH*** (Gambler's Dilwyn Stacked Deck x J.J.'s Riverside Shelby)Tiger is shown here the day he finished his Show Championship under judge Diane Baldwin. Tiger is one of the 3 Dual Champion out of DC/AFC Gambler's Dilwyn Stacked Deck MH, he is a handsome deadgrass dog, very well tempered. We had the pleasure to see Tiger the first time at the ACC FT Speciality 99 in Idaho while he run in Qualifying. Then we saw him again at the ACC Show Speciality 2002 in PA handled in ring by Patsy Barber. Recently we saw him at the ACC Show & FT Speciality 05. Tiger is a wonderful dog. |
